Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Doula?
A doula is someone who is trained to help moms feel supported during pregnancy, labor, and after the baby is born. They give physical, emotional, and helpful information to make childbirth as healthy and positive as possible. Doulas are not doctors or nurses, but they know a lot about birth and can give guidance and care when you need it. Click the link to learn more about my doula services!
Why Would I Need a Doula if I Already Have a Support Partner?
Having a support partner like a spouse, family member, or friend is very important during childbirth, but a doula brings special knowledge and skills to help even more. Here’s why having a doula can be helpful:
- Expertise: Doulas are trained and experienced in childbirth. They can give you good advice and practical help during labor.
- Continuous Support: Medical staff may have other jobs to do, but a doula is there just for you the whole time.
- Comfort and Care: Doulas know how to help with pain and stress. They can use techniques to make you feel more comfortable during labor.
- Partner Support: A doula can guide your partner, helping them feel confident and ready to support you.
- Advocacy: A doula can help share your birth wishes with the medical team to make sure your preferences are respected.

Won’t My Nurse Support Me?
Labor and delivery nurses give important medical care and support during childbirth, but they also have other jobs to do and may be helping other patients at the same time. A doula stays with you the whole time, giving 1-on-1 care to make sure your physical and emotional needs are met without any interruptions.
Why Should I Make a Birth Plan?
I like to call it a Birth Preferences Plan. A Birth Preferences Plan is a written list of what you want during labor and delivery. It helps your healthcare team understand your wishes so everyone knows what’s important to you. Your Birth Preferences Plan can include things like how you want to handle pain, if you want certain medical help, and what you want for postpartum care. Even though it’s good to stay flexible, having a Birth Preferences Plan helps you make smart choices and feel more in control of your birth.
Episode 002 of the Your Best Birth Podcast is all about simple ways to make a Birth Preferences Plan.
Do I Really Need to Take a Childbirth Course?
Childbirth classes give you important information to help you get ready for labor and delivery. They teach about the stages of labor, ways to handle pain, and techniques to stay calm and cope. Taking a class can help you feel less nervous, more confident, and ready for the birth, along with your support partner.
While I don’t offer childbirth classes, I do provide 1-on-1 monthly pregnancy coaching sessions where you can learn all about these topics in a personalized way. Click the link below to find out more!
What if I Decide to Get an Epidural?
Choosing an epidural for pain relief is a personal choice. Even if you plan to have an epidural, childbirth education and doula support can still help. A doula can explain how the procedure works, help you understand when it might be given and what to expect, and support you with contractions before you get it. After the epidural is in place, a doula can help you with positions and ways to stay comfortable.
What if I Need a C-Section?
If you need a C-section, whether planned or not, a doula can be there to support you. They can help explain the procedure, give you emotional support, and reassure you during the experience. A doula can also help make sure your birth wishes are followed as much as possible and support you during your recovery.
